There’s a common numerator and a common denominator algorithm. I can see using these algorithms in two ways:

- ala CME, have students analyze these algorithms and come up with explanations for why they work (which will inevitably involve practicing some of these problems)
- with my remedial class, starting with problems that motivate the common denominator algorithm first, and then moving to the flip-and-multiply algorithm
