Balancing as a model for solving equations

Using the properties of equality is a powerful but tricky algorithm for students to use, and so there’s a need for providing students with a conceptual model that they can turn to when considering whether certain moves are legal. A balanced scale can serve as a model for a balanced equation, as in this Exeter problem set (from Math 1, p5).
